Forgive me if this thread exists already...

This bass was made by Andrea Spada. Ever since he showed it to me (during conversations about maybe building me a bass) I keep thinking about how cool this shape is. Unique, but within the tradition.

Are there other designs that strike you as a little different, but have something special to them? I do love classic looking testore or panormo designs, but every now and then something can look new and classic at the same time.

I know he said this bass was based on another design, but I've never seen anything quite like it.

I'd love to see your top picks. If you were designing a bass for yourself, what would the shape be and why?

Interesting thought - I never much consider what my basses look like since I don't look at them from the same perspective. If it looks like a bass, and it sounds good, and I can play it, I'm happy. Honestly, if you asked me what sort of corners or anything else about the basses I own and play, I'd have no clue.

I've always had a yen for love handles. The basses (Prescott, Klotz and Pollmann bussettos) never happened, but sadly my waist did.

Here's three of my favorite shapes:

    Seth Kimmel "Bigfoot's Guitar":

Arnold Schnitzer's Ergo Bass (the one I'm holding - Ray parker has his own bass):

@kerrycares ' Golia bass, which I think is just beautiful:

So much love for cornerless basses so far- who would have thought.

I played bigfoots guitar #2 at upton a while back, it's for sale at the bass violin shop now. Such a beautiful instrument, as per its design, but also seths mastery in bass building.

I saw that in person this weekend. So many cool little touches going on that you miss looking at full body photos.

I've always thought that busettos were the coolest. Would love to own one

Yup, a close friend of ours plays a busetto, a Shen I believe. Beautiful instrument!

@Chris Fitzgerald , that Ergo is remarkable, surreal. Does it sound different with the hernia?

@dhergert I don’t know if the shape had anything to do with it or not, but that was probably the best playing bass I’ve ever laid hands on.

    That's impressive!

What kind of bag would one have to have, or case, or stand, etc., for the Ergo? A lot of accessories are expecting the general hourglass shape. Although I bet a person could get a bag custom made for it perhaps.

  16. @Chris Fitzgerald The Golia hourglass is outrageous, and I don’t know if anybody but him could pull it off.

Building a bass with my own hands and tools that don’t require electricity is a life goal. It will be cornerless.

I own a Golia. I echo the sentiment. An amazing looking bass! Great sounding as well.

I don't think that Shen makes one- probably a Christopher. My friend has a hybrid version.

@dhergert I would bet David Messina would make it a personal challenge to make an awesome case for that. I keep meaning to get a new case made for my LaScala in purple. This summer, maybe.

@KUNGfuSHERIFF Outrageous is a good word for it. Would love to play one of those basses someday. But in the meantime, hubba hubba!

I'm with you on that, and the one I played sounded great, too.
