    Hello all.

My first post on a forum that I’ve found very resourceful for many years, so thanks for having me.

I’ve been offered, what I now believe to be a ‘77 USA Precision by a close friend of my family and today, I got the opportunity to take it home to strip it down to try to decipher exactly what we have in terms of putting a date on the bass and value. I’d really appreciate the help of some of the knowledgable people on here if poss? I’ve already posted this on a Precision Bass Owners group on Facebook and the responses have been great and I really appreciate the feedback I’ve had so far but just thought I’d put it to the wider, bass players community.

    Looking forward to any replies.

Forum rules are that we cannot help give you a value unless you’re a Supporting Member. Very cool bass, though!

Apologies Warpeg. Genuine mistake on my part, I wasn’t aware of the valuation rule, I’ve tried to edit my post but can’t suss how to do it. Sorry! And yeah, it is a pretty cool bass.

Everything looks correct so far. Number codes on pots aren't decipherable, so if you could get pics of those, as well as backs of pickups, we could check. Otherwise all looks right for 1977

Cheers, b/o 402. Where exactly would I find the number codes on the pots? I had a good look when I raised the scratch plate but couldn’t see any other markings other than what I’ve pictured.

Pickguard isn't original. Would be three ply black/white/black. Very cool

You can see the numbers on the side of the volume pot in your pic #9, but I can't make them out. The tone pot will have the codes in the same place

  10. Started life as Olympic White. New basses this color are usually referred to as vintage white, cream or butter cream. I love when they take on this color. My understanding is that the top coat yellows with age and exposure to light. Cigarette smoke could contribute but I don’t think that’s the usual cause as once was blamed . Nice bass. I’m betting not the lightest .

It’s been annoying to see so many “how much is this bass worth” threads posted by non-supporting members just flying under the radar these past couple of days.
This site’s a trove of information & has a search function - I dunno. Seems lazy. People need to dig a little deeper or cough up some dough like the rest of us if they’re looking for easy quick answers. :bag:

Welcome to TB... looking forward to finding out how this transaction ends

  13. The rule you're referring to is intended to prevent veiled "for sale" ads. It doesn't apply to the OP because he doesn't own the bass, he's looking to buy it.

I personally love the tort/yellow(ed)/rosewood combo. Truly one of my favorite looks. Tort for this time period, if it is a late 70s, is not common and probably not original. Looks like could be Olympic white in the body's neck slot.
Would also like to know weight and neck feel/size.

    Not true.

Anyone can ask what something is worth provided they’re not selling it. The rule was to prevent people from getting around the supporting membership requirement to post in the classifieds by doing what would effectively be a stealth sales ad.

If you’re buying or keeping what you’re asking about, you can ask for member’s opinions on an item’s value.

Does this happen on poly finish as well?

If you’re not trying to sell it here. there is not rule against your asking. It’s a common mistake some TB members make. Ask away.

See my post above this one.

Prices on Reverb are averaging in the mid $2K range for a ‘77 PB.

And welcome to the forum! :)

Get annoyed if you like. However, neither of the above scenarios per se is breaking any site rules. If you don’t wish to answer such questions from non-supporting members then simply don’t. :)

    Cool, thanks!
Also yeah I’m pretty sure one has to be a Supporting Member to ask how much something is worth here. Hence my “complaint”
